A life fraught with obstacles
A modern woman, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who led an eventful life. Before she began painting her folk art, she was raised in a provincial suburb of Mexico City, accompanying her father in his work as a photographer. At the age of eight, she lost the use of one leg due to illness, but this was only the beginning of a long series of hardships. Despite a path fraught with obstacles and a patriarchal society, she managed to gain admission to a prestigious art school.
She later suffered a very serious bus accident, struck by a tram. Frida Kahlo spent much of her life bedridden, forced to give up many dreams. She took time to read novels and poetry as a form of escape. Later, her cultural background would inspire her artwork, primarily self-portraits painted behind her mirror, including several in which she depicts herself as injured.
On the personal front, Frida Kahlo married Diego Rivera at 22. He was twice her age, an artist and a fellow communist. Their relationship, like the rest of her life, was fraught with suffering. She was never able to conceive and was cheated on numerous times.
